Parmenas

Parmenas is a name mentioned in the New Testament man.

Life

On Parmenas is found in the Bible only a single reference. As in the early church in Jerusalem more and more poor, especially widows and orphans were to look after and they can lead to disputes between the Jewish Christians Aramaic and Greek, the apostles were afraid that they would therefore neglect their responsibilities in teaching and preaching. The congregation therefore chose seven deacons, men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, which should also take care of the previously skipped widows of Greek-speaking Jewish Christians (Acts 6:1-6 EU). Except Parmenas were:

  • Stephen
  • Philip
  • Procorus
  • Nicanor
  • Timon
  • Nicholas

The historian Dorotheus indicates Parmenas had died only a few years after his election. Other ancient sources report that he had come into Macedonia under Trajan as a martyr killed.
