Sermon

Sermon (Latin praedicatio ), in English and French Sermon (Christian Medieval Latin, from Latin sermo " change talk, talk, talk" ), is a Christian theological term ( terminus), which refers to the proclamation ( kerygma ) of the Gospel. In a general sense so is the proclamation of the Christian faith in word, deed and life meant, in particular a form of Christian speech as part of worship. The scientific doctrine of the sermon is called homiletics.

Sermon as a Christian theological concept

The Christian concept is mainly influenced by the Gospels, the Acts and the Epistles of the Apostle Paul. The Greek terms " keryssein " or " kerygma " used there, my first, the preaching of Jesus himself, who called the people to repentance. On the other hand - especially in the New Testament epistles - is meant as a Risen Christ, the preaching of the crucified Jesus.

Here's preaching to proclaim the Gospel to non-believers ( Jews and Gentiles ), it is especially since Martin Luther, for the "word" of central importance won, often understood as the proclamation of faith in the church service in the same sense. That is why in the Evangelical Church, the " docere gospel " ( preaching the gospel ) as a ministry of the word of " praecipuus cultus Dei " ( " biggest, most sacred, most necessary, highest worship, .... because the ministry is the highest office in the churches. " ApolCA XV, BSLK, 305.9 f).

Sermon in worship

Evangelical preaching is based on a section or thought from the Bible in general. For this purpose, there is the lectionary that such texts from the Bible for each Sunday and holiday provides the rhythm of six years.

But most of all Catholic theologians emphasize the difference between missionary preaching ( " preach base " ) and intra- Christian faith interpretation and prefer the word for this homily (Greek " to agreement ").

After understanding the Catholic Church, in a sermon, in contrast to the homily, the topic will be freely selected, up to the speech, and it can take place independently of a church service. A homily has to depend increasingly on the two readings and the gospel of the trade fair. According to church rules, a homily should be at every Sunday and holiday are held. For the weekdays it is highly recommended.

However, the sermon or homily in the Catholic Church, as opposed to Protestant, not the central element of worship. While the Protestant church the proclamation and explanation of the word of God is at the center, the preaching in the Catholic Church takes a while important, however, to St.. Sacrifice a subordinate role.

In general, a sermon has the form of a monologue. But there are also more creative forms by in between questions are addressed to the audience ( with reply ), or by a scan or a short film in the sermon is installed.

The duration of a sermon has been greatly reduced over the last decades. Today a sermon in a Catholic church takes about ten minutes, in a Protestant church for about twenty minutes, and in a free church about 30 minutes ( these are rough estimates, which are exceeded rather under - than).

Legal Limits of a sermon

The German Federal Administrative Court held, in a decision dated August 2011 that " the religious freedom of expression, even if it comes to a sermon, no absolute precedence over the interests of the personality and honor guard" enjoys. Prehistory of the judgment was a court dispute between Michael Schmidt -Salomon of the Giordano Bruno Foundation and the Regensburg Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller. This was 2008, a sermon in which he for criticizing religion at two critics whose permission of Schmidt -Salomon was denied, however. A cease and desist leaned Müller but with reference to its special position as bishop of the Catholic Church from. The dispute was ended by the judgment of the Federal Administrative Court.
