Apareiodon affinis

The Algensalmler ( Parodontidae ) are a family of South American tetras. Their range extends from eastern Panama over large parts of South America. You are lacking in some coastal river systems, in Patagonia and in the main stream of the Amazon.

Features

Algensalmler be four to 15 inches long. Your body is elongated and spindle - shaped or pencil. The mouth is terminal, the upper lip is underdeveloped or missing. On the premaxilla ( front part of the upper jaw ) the fish carry four (rarely two) spade -shaped teeth with straight cut edges. The premaxilla is enlarged and very mobile. Some species also on the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Overall, mouth and dentition are highly adapted to the scraping algae from rocks. You have 35 to 41 vertebrae and 34 to 43 scales along the lateral line organ.

The family was previously counted as a family to the Keulensalmlern ( Hemiodontidae ).
