Pascal Schumacher

Pascal Schumacher ( born March 12, 1979 in Luxembourg (city) ) is a Luxembourg jazz vibraphonist, composer and bandleader.

Life and work

Pascal Schumacher studied at the Conservatory of Luxembourg Percussion, later he specialized at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg on Mallet percussion (vibraphone, marimba ... ) in the class of Emmanuel Séjourné. With the " Diplome de Specialisation Clavier " he completed this training phase 2000. At the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag then he studied jazz vibraphone. In parallel, he has made a Master in Musicology at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg. He took, inter alia, Lessons with Gary Burton, David Friedman, Franck Tortiller, Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Bart Quartier and Jean Geoffroy.

In 1999 he received the Prix Norbert Stelmes the " Jeunesse Musicales Luxembourg". Since 1997, Pascal Schumacher played in several bands like the Kristen Cornwell Quintet, Marc Demuth Quartet and the band Gasz3. He also played with Bruno Castellucci, Francesco Tristano Schlimé, Marc Demuth, Rabih Abou Khalil, Greg Lamy, Nathalie Loriers, Michael Wollny, Oliver Strauch, Erwin Vann.

Since 2003, under his leadership, the Pascal Schumacher Quartet ( also spelled 4tet ) was founded with Jef Neve on piano, Christophe Devisscher on double bass and Teun Verbruggen on drums. Meanwhile, however, occupy Jens Düppe the drums and Franz Von Chossy the piano. In August 2004, the band won the First Prize and the Audience Award at the prestigious European Jazz Competition Tremplin Jazz d' Avignon. In the band joined on piano by Franz Chossy and percussionists Jens Düppe a new. In November 2005, the Quartet was awarded the Belgian jazz Django d'Or prize in the category " New Talents ". With Jef Neve Schumacher since 2004, a duo project Face to Face, which is working on the borders between Claude Debussy, Steve Reich and Thelonious Monk. Also in the Luxembourg Philharmonic Schumacher is constantly present as a composer and musician. Since 2001, Pascal Schumacher has also worked as a lecturer in percussion at the Conservatory of Luxembourg. Since October 2010 he has been teaching jazz vibraphone at the Academy of Music in Saarbrücken.

He lives in Luxembourg and Brussels.
