The naval base Pashaliman (Albanian Baza ushtarake e Pashalimanit ) is one of the two main points of the Albanian Navy (the other is in Durrës ). It is located on the south end of the bay of Vlora in the place Orikum. Also, the small naval base on the approximately 25 kilometers further north island of Sazan is part of the Pashaliman naval base.

History

Pashaliman became internationally known after the foundation of the Warsaw Pact in 1955, which belonged to Albania as a founding member, the Soviet Union stationed there twelve of their designated by NATO as the Whiskey - class submarines. Pashaliman in the 1950s was the only Soviet military base in the Mediterranean, and the Soviets invested heavily in the development of of them leased basis. When the Albanian State and party leader Enver Hoxha 1960/61, in the beginning of the dispute between the Soviet Union and China, China's party seized and the USSR urged to end its military presence in Albania, Moscow threatened in April 1961 with the occupation of Vlora to the impending prevent loss of the base, and announced to all economic and military aid. The cast of Vlora there was then but not since the escalation of the Cold War, Moscow employed in other places.

When the Soviet Union then its submarines from Albania withdrew to Hoxha appropriated four of the 1955 and 1956 -built boats ( S -241, S -242, S -358, S- 360), who had gone with Albanian crews and therefore, in his opinion, were Albanian property. The boats were initially operated with Chinese help. When this failed to materialize from the late 1960s, it became increasingly difficult. The first boat was decommissioned in 1976 and used as a supplier of spare parts for the others. The last boat was made in 2003 out of service. All four were in the episode in a neglected state increasingly at a jetty in the northern part of the port of Pashaliman. In 2012, however, to have been sold and disposed of as scrap iron, three of the four submarines.

The events surrounding the withdrawal of the Soviets and the Albanian takeover of the U- boats were represented by Ismail Kadare in his novel The Great Winter ( " Dimri i madh ", 1977).

Current usage

After the end of the communist regime degenerated into the base, and the so-called Lottery Uprising of 1997, she was devastated. It was then renovated under an Albanian -Turkish Agreement of Turkey, which has since also has a right to use.

In May 2009, in Pashaliman the first built back in Albania warship was launched. It was placed in Pashaliman on September 13 in service. The patrol boat P -132 Oriko (named after the ancient city Oricum ) Damen Shipyards was there in cooperation with the Dutch shipyard built that already in 2008, the P -131 Iliria, the first of four ships of the type Stan Patrol 4207 for the Albanian Navy, was built in the Netherlands.
