Patriarch Irinej of Serbia

His Beatitude Patriarch Irinej ( Irenaeus ), also Irinej of Niš (Serbian Cyrillic - Иринеј; born August 28, 1930 in Vidova in Čačak, Yugoslavia; born Miroslav Gavrilovic ) is since 2010 the Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, Archbishop of Peć and Serbian Orthodox Patriarch.

Life

He attended high school in Čačak, followed the theological school in Prizren. He then studied at the Theological Faculty in Belgrade. In 1959, he was consecrated by Patriarch German monk named IRINEJ. From 1959 to 1968 IRINEJ taught as a professor at the theological school in Prizren. After his studies in Athens, he was appointed head of the monastic school at Ostrog monastery to 1971 to 1974 to work as a professor in Prizren again. In 1974 he was appointed Bishop of Moravica and Vicar of the Patriarch German in 1975 as Bishop of Niš. In Niš, he remained the next 35 years.

On 22 January 2010 IRINEJ was elected to succeed Patriarch Pavle of the Serbian Orthodox Church and solved by the " apostolic type of choice ": First, by secret ballot so long until some spiritual dignitaries on three candidates. Then mixed a monk sealed envelopes with the name of the bishops and patriarchs of the lost. Previously, the Holy Spirit is called in, who is responsible for the election of the new Patriarch in this way. This selection method was introduced to, inter alia, to preserve the autonomy of the Church at the patriarchal election and to limit the influence of the state.

The enthronement took place in Belgrade's Cathedral on 23 January 2010.
