Patrick Blanc

Patrick Blanc ( born 1953 in Paris ) is a French botanist and horticulturist at the CNRS. He became known for his " plant walls " ( murs végétaux ), vertical beds in which he leaves the respective local climate adapted plants grow.

Vertical gardens, green walls

At the age of 19 years, during his studies, he went to Thailand. He found that plants grow at almost every conceivable place and need no earth, if they only get water and light. He observed plants, hanging from cliffs, climb up rock faces or cling to cave ceilings. On his return he developed in 1982 at his home in Paris its first vertical garden. The technical procedure, by which he could grant a patent, consists of a felt made of acrylic, which is attached to a wall. In a coarse grid is attached. In the wall irrigation pipes are integrated, a few times every day for a few minutes leave the water. Into slots cut into the felt and then seedlings are planted. The success of planting depends on the selection of plants that need to be adapted to location, sunlight, direction and air. Here are Patrick Blanc his extensive knowledge as a botanist benefit. In Central Europe it chooses the mix more hardy ferns, mosses, grasses and bushes.

His breakthrough as a landscape architect, he experienced in 1988 at a flower show in Chaumont sur Loire.

As a result, he also worked with prominent architects. Its green walls in the administrative building of the Museum Quai Branly by Jean Nouvel became known, Herzog & de Meuron made him opposite the Prado in Madrid a 600 square meter wall at the Caixa Forum make.
