Patrick Neeson Lynch

Patrick Neeson Lynch ( born March 10, 1817 in Clones, County Fermanagh, Ireland, † February 26, 1882 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA) was Bishop of Charleston.

Life

Patrick Neeson Lynch came with his parents in 1819 in the United States. The family settled in Cheraw. Patrick Neeson Lynch studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Charleston. He received on 5 April 1840, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Lynch received his doctorate in Rome in Catholic theology. Subsequently, he was secretary of the Bishop of Charleston. He also taught at the seminary in Charleston.

On December 11, 1857, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Bishop of Charleston. The Archbishop of Baltimore, Francis Patrick Kenrick, donated to him on 14 March 1858, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Mobile, Michael Portier, and the Bishop of Savannah, John Barry.

Was on February 20, 1864 Patrick Neeson Lynch by the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis, sent as a delegate to Rome to obtain recognition of the Confederate States of America by the Holy See. But Pope Pius IX. received him only in his ecclesiastical function, thus rejecting the recognition of the Confederate States of America.

Patrick Neeson Lynch took part in the First Vatican Council.
