Paul Ben-Haim

Paul Ben- Chaim (Hebrew פאול בן חיים, Ben -Haim, born as Paul Frankenburg, born July 5, 1897 in Munich, † January 20, 1984 in Tel Aviv) was an Israeli composer.

Life

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich studied Ben Haim from 1915 to 1920 at the Academy of Music in Munich with Friedrich Klose and Walter Courvoisier (composition ) and Berthold Kellermann (piano) and then was assistant to Bruno Walter and Hans Knappertsbusch. From 1924 to 1931 he was Kapellmeister in Augsburg. In 1933 he emigrated from Germany and lived since then as a composer and conductor in Tel Aviv. Through its collaboration with the singer Braha Zefira he met Jewish and Arabic songs whose melody and rhythm influenced his compositions. Among his students Tzvi Avni, Ben -Zion Orgad, Ami Maayani and Noam Sheriff.

Works

Ben -Haim composed two symphonies (1940 and 1945), a piano, a violin and a cello concerto and other orchestral works, a Sonata for mandolin, guitar, harpsichord, harp and string orchestra, violin sonatas, choirs, oratorio ( Joram, 1933, text by Rudolf Borchardt ), liturgical works and songs.

The oratorio Joram was listed in April 2012 for the first time in Israel in an uncut original version. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Munich Motet Choir under the direction of Hayko Siemens designed the performance in Smolarz Auditorium Tel Aviv University.

Honors and Awards

Ben -Haim was awarded the Israel Prize for his work The Sweet Psalmist of Israel. The city of Augsburg honored the composers active until his dismissal in 1931 at the Municipal Theatre in 2010 with the walk designation " Paul Ben -Haim - way ". The path leads in the Oberhausen district on the Wertach along.
