Paul Butler (bishop)

Paul Roger Butler ( born September 18, 1955 in Kingston upon Thames ) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 2010 to 2014 Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and is since 2014 Bishop of Durham in the Church of England.

Life

Butler attended Kingston Grammar School in Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. He studied at the University of Nottingham, where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts ( BA) in the subjects of English and History. During this time he was member of the congregation at Christ Church in Chilwell. From 1977 to 1978 he worked as a secretary at the evangelical Christian charity Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship ( UCCF ). He then studied theology from 1980 to 1983 at Wycliffe Hall College, University of Oxford.

From 1983 to 1987 he was Vicar ( Curate ) on the All Saints Church, at the same time in charge of the Holy Trinity Church, in Wandsworth in the Diocese of Southwark. From 1987 to 1994 he was an evangelist in the Scripture Union, a Bible Society, active in Inner London, from 1992 there was Deputy Chief of Mission ( Deputy Head of Mission ). From 1987 to 1994 he was honorary chaplain (Non- Stpendiary Minister ) to St. Paul in East Ham in the Diocese of Chelmsford. From 1994 he moved permanently to the Diocese of Chelmsford. He was there from 1994 to 1997 Pastor ( Priest- in-Charge ). At St. Mary's Church in Walthamstow, simultaneously with responsibility for St Stephen, and Father ( Priest- in-Charge ) at St Luke 's Church From 1997 to 2004 he was Dean (Team Rector ) in Walthamstow, at the same time from 2000 to 2004 and Regional Dean ( Area Dean ) of Waltham Forest. In 2004 he became the successor of Jonathan Gledhill Suffragan Bishop of Southampton. In this role he was also responsible for the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. He was consecrated on 24 June 2004 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams Bishop and introduced in the Southwark Cathedral at his office. In June 2009, he was appointed as the successor of George Henry Cassidy, who went into retirement in September 2009, the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham. On 27 February 2010, he was introduced with a solemn Mass at Southwell Minster in his office.

In September 2013 it was announced that Butler is the new Bishop of Durham. He will be succeeded by Justin Welby. This had been raised in 2013 to the Archbishop of Canterbury. In January 2014 Butler's election as Bishop of Durham was officially confirmed in a solemn Mass in York Minster. It is thus formally Bishop of Durham. His enthronement takes place on February 22, 2014 in Durham Cathedral.

Butler is recognized as a theologian. He wrote several books, articles, magazines and radio programs on various topics of the Christian faith. His publications include the books Reaching Children (1992 ), Following Jesus (1993 ), Friends of God ( 1993), Want to be in God 's Family? (1994 ), Growing Up in God 's Family (1994 ), Reaching Families (1995) and Temptation and Testing (2007). He also wrote a contribution to the anthology Through the Eyes of a Child ( 2009).

Work in the public

The focus of his pastoral church work lay in the religious, children's and youth work, particularly in the pre-accession of children and young people in the Christian faith. As part of its commitment to the Scripture Union, he organized each year by 2004, children's and youth camps in the county of Kent. In 2004, he assumed the role of Advocate for Children in the Church of England. Intensive he took care of the pastoral care in inner city communities, organized prayer pilgrimages and religious retreats.

Initiated on the diocesan level and used Butler intensive contacts with partner dioceses in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Private

Butler is married to Rosemary Butler. His wife is a trained nurse and midwife and works as a nurse. He is the father of four children, two sons and two daughters. His leisure time activities and hobbies include Butler reading, writing books and walking. Butler enjoys listening to music, especially of Coldplay, Elbow, Genesis and Eric Clapton, in the field of classical music include George Frideric Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven among his favorite composers.
