Paul Elliott (footballer)

Paul Elliott, CBE ( born March 18, 1964 in Lewisham ) is a former English footballer.

Life and career

Elliott began his career at Charlton Athletic in the early 1980s. In 1983 he signed a contract with the then first division club Luton Town. After 66 games in Luton in 1985, he moved to Aston Villa. After two years with the Villans he went to Italy to play there for two years in Pisa Calcio. In 1989 he returned to the United Kingdom. From 1989 to 1991 he played in Scotland with Celtic and became the first Englishman ever Scottish Footballer of the Year (1991). In the summer of 1991 he went to Chelsea. In September 1992 he was injured severely in the knee and had to end his career.

2003 Elliot got the " Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" by Queen Elizabeth II awarded. He received the award for his contribution to British youth players and his tireless efforts against racism. The Englishman was the first black man to play in the Old Firm ( the Glasgow Derby). 2013, the next higher level of the Commander, he was awarded.
