Paul Helminger

Paul Helminger ( born October 28, 1940 in Esch- sur -Alzette ) is a Luxembourgian political scientist and politician of the party DP. He was from 1999 to 2011 mayor of the city of Luxembourg.

Life

During the Second World War drew helmet Ingers family of Esch- sur -Alzette in the metropolitan district Belair, where Helminger went to primary school. After graduating from the Athénée de Luxembourg in 1959 he went to Paris to study at the Sorbonne until 1963 Law. At the same time he studied at the Institut d' études politiques International Relations. In 1964 he completed his doctorate in law in Luxembourg, then he moved to Stanford University in California to earn a master's in political science.

Helmet Inger 's political career began in 1966 when he represented Luxembourg at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in Helsinki and Geneva, before he was appointed in 1974 to the Head of Cabinet for Gaston Thorn. In the government Werner - Thorn- Flesch, he was from 1979 to 1984 Secretary of State for External Relations, Trade and collaboration, State Secretary for Economic Affairs and State Secretary for Justice.

From 1984 to 1989 and from 1994 to 2012 was Helminger deputy in the Luxembourg Parliament. In June 2012, he resigned to retire from politics.

1987 Helminger was elected to the City Council of the City of Luxembourg. In 1991 he was alderman and mayor in 1999. In the municipal elections in 2011, he joined as a top candidate of the DP. However, his party received the most votes again and was able to continue the coalition with the Greens, but Helminger was only second in the list, and therefore renounced in favor of Xavier begging on the office of mayor.

Private

Helminger is married, father of seven children and lives in Luxembourg City.

From 1994 to 2003 he was President of the Luxembourg Tennis Federation ( Fédération luxembourgeoise de tennis ).
