Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry

Paul Jacques Aimé Baudry ( born November 7, 1828 in La Roche- sur -Yon (Vendée ), † 17 January 1886 in Paris) was a French painter.

Equipped with a scholarship came Paul Baudry in 1846 to Paris at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts and became a student of the painter Michel Martin Drolling and Antoine Sartoris. 1850 took Baudry, encouraged by his teacher, at the exhibition of the Paris Salon and won the Prix de Rome. In addition to a medal, the price was associated with a generous traveling scholarship which enabled Baudry, to undertake a study tour to Italy and reside almost four years in Rome to study the ancient masters and copy. One of his first works applies there, " The Child and Happiness" ( 1850) and is still kept in the style of Venetian masters.

At the turn of 1850/51 Baudry returned to France and settled as a freelance artist in Paris. For the next few years, the portrait painting became an important focus of his work. In addition, of course, arose also other works, such as " The punishment of a Vestal Virgin ".

1861 Baudry turned to " The Assassination of Marat by Charlotte Corday " of history painting with the image. Since it was not the genre, he returned after some time back to his real style, which had been greatly influenced by Italian Renaissance painting.

1866 Baudry got the commission to design the foyer of the Opéra Garnier in Paris again. 1872 could the work be completed. Baudry had kept the paintings in the style of Michelangelo; time, he was extra in 1864 once again traveled to Rome to be inspired. In addition to three large ceiling paintings ( "Melody and Harmony ", " Tragedy and Comedy ", " Parnassus" ) graced " The Apotheosis of Homer ", the narrow sides with ten the effects of dance and music and the triumph of beauty illustrative compositions. In between, the Muses were represented.

Especially with his Muses Baudry oriented more to Paolo Veronese and Francesco Primatice. With the "Appearance and glorification of the law" Baudry illustrated the great hall of the Court of Cassation in Paris and was honored in 1881 for the occasion of the exhibition of the Parisian salons with a Medal of Honor.

1883 Baudry was instrumental in the design of Chantilly Castle. The last years of his life he lived quite retired and painted very little.

At the age of 57 years Paul Baudry died on 17 January 1886 in Paris.
