Paul Sheriff

Paul Sheriff (birth name: Russian Павел Александрович Шувалов, Pavel Aleksandrovich Shuvalov, too: Paul Schouvaloff; born November 13, 1903 in Moscow, † September 25, 1960 in London) was a native of Russia British art director and production designer, who at the Academy Awards 1953 Academy Award for best Production Design in the color film Moulin Rouge ( 1952) won.

Life

A native of Russia Sheriff studied post-school at the University of Oxford and began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1938 with the film The Divorce of Lady X. He worked until his death in the production of more than thirty films.

In 1947 he was nominated along with Carmen Dillon for the Academy Award for Best Production Design, and indeed for the color film Henry V (1944 ), one directed by Laurence Olivier historical film based on the eponymous drama William Shakespeare with Olivier, Felix Aylmer and Leo Genn in the lead roles.

For the scene image in the rotated by John Huston biopic of French painter Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, titled Moulin Rouge (1952 ) and José Ferrer, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Colette Marchand in the lead roles, he was at the Academy Awards in 1953 along with Marcel Vertes the Academy Award for best Production Design.
