Paul von Klenau

Paul August of Klenau (born 11 February 1883 in Copenhagen, † August 31, 1946 ) was a Danish composer and conductor.

Life

Klenau, who came from a German family, entered 1900 in Copenhagen Conservatory and studied violin and composition there. In 1902 he moved to Berlin, where he became a pupil Max Bruch. Two years later he took on a renewed study at Ludwig Thuille in Munich. After Thuille death in 1907 Klenau found a job as conductor at the Municipal Theater in Freiburg, but also continued to take music lessons, this time under Max von Schillings.

Klenau first symphony was premiered successfully in 1908 in Munich. In 1912, he conducted concerts of the Frankfurt Bach Society. In the following years led his appearances as a conductor Klenau through several European countries (including he founded in his native city of Copenhagen 1920, the Danish Philharmonic Society ) until it was established in 1922 choirmaster of the Vienna Concert Society. During the period of National Socialism Klenau approached to those in power and was especially with his operas between 1933 and 1945 in the German Empire as one of the leading composers. In 1940 he moved again to Copenhagen and devoted himself entirely to composition. There, Paul died of Klenau age of 63 in 1946.

Style

Klenau work shows a variety of influences, particularly of German music. By his early compositions gleams occasionally break through the musical language of his teachers and Thuille, but also the Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner. However, it could already here the composer has steered his own way. For Klenau later career as a composer employment with the twelve-tone music of Arnold Schoenberg was important, but he threw a predominantly tonal order. As we were able Klenau to convince the Nazis believe that his form of twelve-tone composition constitutes a counterpart to the " Jewish " Schoenberg's direction, he was able to keep as a modern composer in the repertoires after 1933. His work includes nine symphonies, operas, ballets, songs and chamber music works.
