Paul Webster (jazz)

Paul Frank Webster ( born August 24, 1909 in Kansas City, † May 6, 1966 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter of swing.

Webster studied at Fisk University and the Williams Institute of Music. He played in the territory bands of George E. Lee (1927 ), Andy Kirk, Bennie Moten (1927 /28) and from 1935 to 1944 when Jimmy Lunceford. In the 1940s, he often played with Cab Calloway (eg 1948/49 ) and was 1946/47 and 1952/53, with Charlie Barnet. Then he starred in Broadway musical orchestras and with Sy Oliver (1947 and occasionally in the 1950s to the 1960s ), with whom he recorded also, Ed Wilcox (1948 /49) and Count Basie (1950).

He is best known from his time with Lunceford, where he played the high notes in the trumpet, replacing Tommy Stevenson. He was also briefly in 1931 Lunceford.

He is not to be confused with the songwriter Paul Francis Webster ( 1907-1984 ).
