Paul Wittich

Paul Wittich (* probably around 1546 in Breslau, † January 9, 1586 in Vienna ) was a German mathematician and astronomer, who designed the Tychonische system that Tycho Brahe published in the late 16th century.

Wittich studied from 1563-1566 at the University of Leipzig, where Valentin Thau taught another student there was Tycho Brahe to 1565, studied at Wittenberg and Frankfurt / Oder later. A final study is not known. Wittich talked about 1580 in Brahe on the island Hven in Öresund, where he worked in the Uraniborg. Afterwards, he utilized his knowledge gained there in the service of the Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse -Kassel.

In his biography of Nicolaus Copernicus in 1654 Pierre Gassendi Wittich has been ranked as one of the " Copernican " of before 1615.

The importance of Wittich in the cosmology of his time, as well as the network of the scientist was documented by Owen Gingerich.
