Paulos Gregorios

Paulos Mar Gregorios or Paul Verghese ( born August 9, 1922 in Tripunithura, Kerala, † 24 November 1996) was a Syrian Orthodox priest, Metropolitan and Catholicos of the East.

Life and work

Paul Verghese or " Vargīsa Pola " was born in the traditionally Christian family of TP Piely and Aley Piely and learned his early education in his hometown. He began his career as a freelance journalist with articles and reports for various newspapers in Kochi and Malabar. He later took a journalistic work in " Cochin Transport Company ". In 1942, he became active in the " Post & Telegraphs Department". This was followed by work as a teacher in Ethiopia. There the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie was aware of him. The resulting intellectual relationship meant that Verghese in Ethiopia had a career. He was delegated to further study in the United States: at Goshen College, Oklahoma University, Princeton and Yale.

In 1954 he returned to India with a degree as a master 's degree in theology. He began working as a director of the fellowship house in Aluva and as a guest professor at the Union Christian College Aluva. In 1955 he joined the faculty of the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam. He was also Secretary General of the movement of Orthodox Christian students. During a visit to the Ethiopian Emperor in India 1956, Verghese was convinced to return to Ethiopia. There he was in the period following his work as personal assistant and advisor to the emperor.

In 1958 he returned again to India and was ordained a deacon. In 1961 he was ordained by the Katholikose as the "Father Paul Verghese ," the man at the top leadership of his church. As Father Verghese, he continued his theological studies continued. He wrote his doctoral thesis at Oxford and Germany and became a doctor of theology at Serampore College, Calcutta. In 1967 he was appointed as Director of the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam. In 1991, he became president of the officially established Interreligious Federation for World Peace. An important mission of this association was to create a " Peace University ", which is also in favor of the Dalai Lama.

In November 2002, Paulos Mar Gregorios conference was held in Chicago ( USA), under the slogan " A Life of Intimacy with God Close " instead.
