Pavilly

Pavilly is a French town with 6224 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Seine- Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region.

Geography

Pavilly is located approximately 22 kilometers north- west of Rouen in the Pays de Caux. Through the municipal area, the flow Austreberthe, a tributary of the Seine, and the river Saffimbec.

History

The Priory of Pavilly was founded around 662 by Philibert, abbot of Jumièges. It was destroyed by the Normans in 1090 and rebuilt. She was from 1881 to 1905 in the possession of a Congregation of Sisters of St. Francis and was then abandoned.

Policy

Pavilly part of the community association Communauté de communes Caux- Austreberthe. Since 1972 is twinned with Freckenhorst in Germany.

Attractions

The Château d' Esneval is classified as a monument historique since 1970. In the 11th century stood in his place a mill, this is delivered in a charter of William the Conqueror. The first castle of the lords of Pavilly was destroyed in the 15th century. From 1469 to 1478 was Robert de Dreux ( 1406-1498 ), Baron of Esneval, built the present castle and the chapel of Saint -Thomas -de- Cantorbéry. The chapel was destroyed in 1770 and rebuilt. Castle and chapel are now in private ownership.

The Chapel of Saint - Austreberthe was built around 1091, it belonged to the priory and is since 1934 historiques in the additional list of registered Monuments ( inscrit MH).

Specialty

The city is known for its cheese, the Neufchatel, and for its Calvados.

Personalities

  • The Holy Austreberta (French Austreberthe ) ( 630-704 ) was abbess in Pavilly. She was a series of miracles, but is little known outside of the Haute -Normandie.
