Pearse Doherty

Pearse Doherty (Irish Ó Piaras Dochartaigh, born July 6, 1977 in Glasgow, Scotland) is an Irish politician who served from 2007 to 2010 in the Seanad Éireann senator and has since November 26, 2010 deputy in Dáil Éireann.

Doherty was born in 1977 in Glasgow, Scotland, but lived in Gweedore in County Donegal, since he was three years old, and is fluent in Irish. Since 1994 he is a member of Sinn Féin and was a founding member of Ogra Shinn Féin, the youth wing of Sinn Féin. In 2007 he was elected as the first Sinn Féin member in the Seanad Éireann. Prior to his election he was a member since 2004 the Donegal County Council. 2002 and 2007 Doherty stepped to the election in the Dáil Éireann, but could gain no mandate. In 2004, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament.

In November 2010, he managed to get elected in a by-election as MP for the constituency of Donegal South West in Dáil Éireann.

Doherty is a trained civil engineer. He is married and has two sons.
