Pebbles (series)

Pebbles is the name of an LP series, which was published in 1979 by Greg Shaw.

The material for the compilations Shaw took from his own collection of rare garage rock singles from the 1960s. With Pebbles Shaw tried to take over the concept of successful Nuggets compilation by Lenny Kaye. The selected pieces were not known to the same extent. Often the term Sixties Punk was used for this music. The reason for this was the subtitle of the series as "Original Artyfacts From The First Punk Era " or "Original Punk Rock From The Psychedelic Sixties ".

Initially, only U.S. bands were represented on the compilations, and later included also European. The series included 28 LPs and has been published on the sub- label Archive International Productions of Shaw's own label Bomp Records. Until then completely unknown bands such as Scope, The Hecklers, Magic Mushrooms, Sea Monkeys and many others so a wider audience were made known.

The Pebbles sampler received cult status, especially in Europe, as they were only available in a few record stores. Some of the published songs have been covered by bands such as The Undertones, The Cramps and others.

The Pebbles series can be seen as the beginning of today successful re-issue wave, the re-release of older pieces of music under a new label. So was followed by other series like Back From The Grave, Mind Rocker, Highs In The Mid- Sixties, Rubbles, Boulders and published in 1980 by Rhino Records Nuggets series, which is often confused by the identical name with the first compilation of Lenny Kaye.
