Pecos River

Pecos River shortly before it flows into the Rio Grande, from its sediments it is dammed here

The Pecos rises near Santa Fe in the U.S. state of New Mexico and flows over 1490 km through the eastern part of this state and neighboring Texas before it flows into near Del Rio in Rio Grande. The river drains an area of 114,700 km ².

In Avalon and McMillan, the river is dammed to help as part of the Carlsbad reclamation projects founded in 1906 for the irrigation of about 101 km ² of land. In the western part of Texas, the river is also dammed up by the Red Bluff Dam to Red Bluff Reservoir. The portion of the reservoir, which extends into New Mexico, is the lowest point of that state. New Mexico and Texas fought over water rights on the river, to the Government of the United States arbitrating the dispute in 1949 in Washington.

In the second half of the 19th century, the term referred to " West of the Pecos " the rugged border areas of the Wild West.
