Pediocactus peeblesianus is plant species of the genus Pediocactus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet honors Robert Hibbs Peebles ( 1900-1955 ). English common names are " Navajo Cactus ", " Peeble 's Cactus ", " Peeble 's Hedgehog Cactus" and " Peeble 's Navajo Cactus".

Description

The individual, spherical to egg-shaped, gray-green plant body are 1.5 to 5 cm long, and reach 2 to 3.5 cm in diameter. On them are cylindrical, 2-6 mm long and 2-6 mm wide warts. From the round areoles arises from the characteristic korkige, torn, white to gray central spines, which can also missing. The three to four (rarely 6), cross-shaped spines of the same color and texture are 2-10 mm long.

The funnel-shaped, irregular at the apex appears flowers have a length of 1 to 2.5 cm, and reach a diameter of 2 cm. The bloom is yellow, cream to tan and have a brown center strip. It blooms in April to May.

Dissemination

Pediocactus peeblesianus is one of the rarest and smallest species of cacti in the United States. The species grows endemic in Arizona in Navajo County on gravelly hills at altitudes of 1450 m to 1600 m and is associated with Sclerocactus whipplei, Echinocactus polycephalus and other Opuntia and Yucca species.

System

The first plants were discovered in 1935 by Whittaker, who worked for since Arizona Highway Department, near Holbrook in Central Arizona. 1943, under the name Navajoa peeblesiana the first description by Léon Camille Marius Croizat. Lyman David Benson presented the type 1962 in Pediocactus the genus.

Fritz Hochstätter differed in its processing as monotypic genus Navajoa 2007, three subspecies:

Endangering

The type and all its species are threatened and were in the Appendix I of the CITES taken to protect endangered species. In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN, the type is known as " Least Concern ( LC) ," ie, than not led at risk.
