Pedraza (Segovia)

Pedraza is a mountain village in the province of Segovia in the autonomous community of Castile -Leon. The whole place is recognized in the category Conjunto histórico - artístico since 1951, National Treasure ' ( Bien de Interès Cultural ).

Location

Pedraza is located at an altitude of about 1070 meters above sea level. inst in the northwestern foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The distance to Segovia is just under 40 km to the southwest; Madrid is about 125 km.

Demographics

In the 19th century the city had well over 1000 inhabitants.

Economy

Previously Pedraza was craftsmanship and mercantile center of a series of small hamlets and farmsteads. With the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the improvement of infrastructure, particularly roads, this function is no longer guaranteed. However, the site for the day and weekend tourism has become attractive.

Attractions

  • The Puerta de la Villa, the only access to the town center, is originally from the Middle Ages; however, it was restored in the 16th century by Íñigo Fernández de Velasco y Mendoza, the second Duke of Frías and redesigned.
  • The standing arrived just after neighborhood former prison ( cárcel ) of the place with his two small wooden cells in which up to 15 miscreants could be accommodated, can be visited. It is considered as an impressive example of a medieval or early modern provincial prison.
  • The site, with its roadside arcades or wood -frame buildings, stone houses and narrow streets is the biggest attraction of Pedraza. On the large main square, Plaza Mayor bullfights ( corridas ) took place.
  • The San Juan church was built in Romanesque style - from this period are the tower and apse; the interior was remodeled in the Baroque period.
  • The Pedraza Castle belonged to the Velasco family and is located about 250 meters from the center.

Festivals

On the 1st and 2nd Saturday in July, the " Night of the Candles " ( Noche de las Velas ) takes place, which gives the place in the late evening and early night hours, a peculiar atmosphere.
