Pedro Correia Garção

Pedro António Joaquim Correia da Serra Garçao e Salema ( born April 29, 1724 in Lisbon, Portugal, † November 10, 1772 same place ) was a neoclassical Portuguese poet. He is considered one of the most important neo-classicists in the literary history of Portugal.

Life

Correia Garçao was there born in a wealthy family, the son of Philippe Correia Serra and a Frenchwoman. As a child he learned French, English and Italian. He initially studied Classics at the Jesuit - Kollegg in Lisbon and then moved to the specialized legal, that he studied at the University of Coimbra, but without a degree. Then he was in the Casa da India working as an administrator. In 1750 he was even knighted in the Order of Christ. He married in 1751 Dona Maria Salema and became very rich through the dowry.

In 1756 he was involved in the founding of the " Arcadia Lusitania ". Literary works he also served as editor of Gazeta de Lisboa, 1760-1762. His poetic work comprised satires, odes, sonnets and epistles. He also left behind two plays, in which he ridiculed the Lisbon bourgeoisie mainly.

The " Arcadia Lusitania " was a literary secret society. It was officially supported by the government and should be countered with reformist and liberal goals. They paid homage to the Greek and Roman classics, mainly in the form of poetry and literature. The members met to read from their works and mutually to criticize and viewing it. Each member had a pseudonym, Correia Garçaos was " Corydon Erimateu ".

Garçao most important contribution to Portuguese literature was the " Cantada de Dido ", the song by Dido, a poem that was inspired by the fourth book of the Aeneid of Virgil. The very significant for Portugal poem was even translated into English. It gives Garçao the title of " second Horace from Portugal ".

In 1771 he came out to this day unexplained circumstances into prison, where he died on 10 November 1772 on the very day on which he was to be pardoned by the Marques de Pombal.
