Penn Yan is a village in Yates County in the U.S. state of New York. In the census of 2000, the municipality had a population of 5,219 inhabitants. It is the seat of the district administration. The name was invented by the early American settlers as an abbreviation for Pennsylvania and Yankee, which should describe the origin of the settlers from the state of Pennsylvania as well as New England.

The municipal area is divided between the townships of Milo and Benton, with the majority of Milo. South of the village there is also an airport, Penn Yan Airport.

Geography

Penn Yan is located at the northern end of the eastern branch of Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.0 km ². 5.9 km ² of which are land and 0.2 km ² water surface. Thus, 2.58% of the total area is covered by water.

Demography

The census in 2000 showed 2,141 households, and of these 29.2% had children under the age of 18 and living with them, 41.2 % were married couples living together, 12.8% were households with no husband present, and 41, 1% were non-families. 35.1 % of all households consisted of people living alone and 18.5 % lived alone and were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 persons and the average family size is 2.90 people.

Ethnic minorities are a rarity in Penn Yan. According to the 2000 census, 97.15 % of the population were considered " white" ( European origin ).

The population was divided into 23.9 % who were younger than 18 years, 7.6% of 18 - to 24 -year-old, 26.4 % 25 - to 44 -year-old, 20.4 % 45 - to 64 -year-old and 21.7 % over 65 - year-old. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females 87.2 males. For every 100 females over the age of 18 years 81.2 males.

The average income per household in the township was $ 29,278, and the median income per family $ 39,087. Males had a median income of $ 30,692 compared with $ 19,263 for women. The per capita income for the village was $ 15,848. 13.8 % of the population and 9.7 % of families were below the poverty line. 17.8% of under- 18 year olds and 11.7 % of people over the age of 65 were below this limit.

History

The first house was built in 1799 in Penn Yan wooden. In 1823, the hamlet of the Prefecture of the newly created county, Yates County, and received in 1833 the status of a village community.

The first settlers were mainly followers of Jemima Wilkinson (1753-1819), a religious Eifererin, who came from Cumberland, Providence County. She claimed to have received a divine order, and preached in Rhode Iceland, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Then she received a larger piece of land, today the village is on the, and called it Jerusalem in 1789 after the village of Hopeton away in 1788 at the mouth of Keuka Lake, about a mile from Seneca Lake, had founded. Many of her supporters followed her there, and she lived there in 1790. Against the turn of the century into the 19th century, their followers disbanded.

Recently, some Amish and Mennonites have settled in the area.
