Pennan

Pennan is a Scottish fishing village. It is located about 15 km west of Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire unitary authority.

Pennan is a long-drawn street village between the shoreline and more directly behind the houses towering rocks. Because of this idyllic location, it was chosen as the main location for the film Local Hero. Pennan is in the film the fictional place Ferness dar. Famous were especially the scenes in which the protagonist of the film MacIntyre - played by Peter Riegert - several times from a standing directly on the harbor wall red telephone booth at his boss Felix Happer - played by Burt Lancaster - calling in the Texas home. The cell phone used in the movie was a dummy. Due to the large number of visitors, who were looking for exactly this phone booth in the village, but was in 1989 a few meters installed a working phone booth next to the site of the dummy. It is jokingly referred to as Scotland's most famous phone booth.

The inhabitants of the place lived for centuries mainly from fishing. Even today is operated by Pennan from fishing. Many former fishermen but migrated in recent years due to the difficult living conditions in place. The vacant houses are nowadays mostly used as holiday homes. In 2007, parts of the village were damaged by a landslide. A 2009 discovered new cracks in the rock walls raises fears of further landslides.
