Pepel

Province

Pepel is a coastal village in Sierra Leone. The residents mainly belong to the ethnic group of the Temne.

Pepel is in the Chiefdom Lokomasama (also Loko Massama ), Port Loko District in the Northern Province and is separated by the Sierra Leone River from the capital, Freetown.

Economy

On the site is the port Pepel, is shipped from which iron ore since 1933. The ore is shipped by rail from the mines in Marampa. By 1975 Pepel was the only port in the country, was shipped from the iron ore. Every year, two to three million tonnes of ore were shipped. Meanwhile, Freetown has corresponding port facilities.

Beside the harbor are fishing and rice cultivation more sources of income of the population.
