Percilia

Percilia gillissi

The Südbarsche ( Percilia ) are a kind of bass related freshwater fish. They are found in rivers in southern and central Chile. The genus forms a separate family, the Perciliidae. Some authors, however, the fish are placed in the family of cod perch ( Percichthyidae ).

Features

Südbarsche be nine inches long. They have two dorsal fins. The first is supported by nine to ten spines, the second 12 to 14 soft rays. The anal fin has three spines and 11 to 13 soft rays. The weichstrahlige part of the dorsal and anal fin is scaly. There is a black spot on the fin base of the pectoral fins.

Percilia gillissi lays its eggs in the cavities of the freshwater sponge Spongilla igloviformis, guarded there by the male. Through the flow of water to generate the sponge, eggs, larvae and young fish are well supplied with oxygen. Only with a length of 8 to 10 mm left the young fish the sponge.
