Perizonius

Jacob (us) Perizonius, even Perizonius, actually Jacob Voorbroek ( born October 26, 1651 Appingedam, † April 6, 1715 in Leiden ) was a Dutch classical scholar.

Jacobus Perizonius came as the son of Anton Perizonius (1626-1672) to the world, who was known in his lifetime for his treatise De ratione studii theologici. He studied at Utrecht University, where he received his doctorate in 1979 with the writing Dissertationum Triassic. 1682 he was appointed to the chair of rhetoric and history at the University of Franeker. Johann Georg Graevius and Nikolaes Heinsius the Elder provided for the appointment at the University of Leiden. There Perizonius taught until his death in 1715. He dealt with different eras of history, in his book Rerum by European p maxime gestarum from ineunte saeculo sectodecimo usque ad mortem Caroli V. ( 1719), and gave the work Minerva sive de causis linguae Latinae by Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas (1523-1600) out. His most important work was Animadversiones historicae (1685 ), where he explained the basics of historical criticism even more than 100 years before Barthold Georg Niebuhr's epochal lectures on Roman history. In addition, he wrote, among other writings on the history of the Roman Republic.
