Peroj

Peroj is a small town in Croatia, with about 600 inhabitants in the vicinity of about 8 km from the Pula and is adjacent to the larger fishing Fazana. From the village, you have views of the island of Brijuni, which can be reached with an excursion boat. Peroj is a very quiet resort, with smaller markets, taverns and bars.

The village already existed at the time of the Romans, who named the village Pedrolo. Once in a great plague epidemic only 3 people in the village lived, the town was settled in 1657 by Montenegrins who had fled before the Ottomans. The Montenegrins had fought on the side of the Republic of Venice, which they relocated from the area around Crmnica after Peroj. The town retains some Montenegrin customs until today. So designed the Montenegrins in 1787 a former Catholic church to their Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon order. For this reason, the place also has the only Orthodox church in Istria.
