Perry Anderson

Perry Anderson ( born 1938 in London) is a British historian.

Life

Anderson is Professor of History and Sociology at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is the author of important works on European history and political essayist. His contributions appear regularly in the London Review of Books and the New Left Review, whose editor he was (1962-1982 and 2000-2003) for many years. In the academic year 1997/1998 Anderson was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin. German -language translations of his texts appear in the cultural magazine Lettre International since 2007.

Anderson was in the 1960s and 1970s, one of the main protagonists of the intellectual New Left in Britain. In particular, his book Considerations on Western Marxism (1976 ) also deployed on the boundaries of the Anglo-Saxon world, a relatively large effect. Anderson coined in the term " Western Marxism ", which according to him originated with Lukacs, Korsch and Gramsci in the 1920s. In addition to these thinkers he assigns especially the chief representative of the Frankfurt School, this flow of Marxism. For Anderson of Western Marxism is characterized among other things by the feature of the structural separation of political practice. He had trodden Marx's own development in the opposite direction. Marx had moved towards its development of the philosophy of off - and on politics and economics, Western Marxism, however, had come back more and more on the terrain of philosophy of economics and politics.
