Péter Erdő

Cardinal Péter Erdo [ pe ː tɛr ɛrdø ː ] ( born June 25, 1952 in Budapest, Hungary) is Archbishop of Esztergom- Budapest.

Life

Péter Erdo studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Esztergom, Budapest and Rome and a doctorate in the fields of theology and canon law. In 1975 he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a curate in Dorog. After further studies in Rome from 1977 to 1980 he worked in the years 1980 to 1988 as a professor of theology at the Seminary of Esztergom and held visiting professorships at several foreign universities. On September 5, 1994, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Apostolic prothonotary. From 1988 to Péter Erdo lectured as a professor at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic Pázmány Péter University in Budapest, he was its rector from 1998 to 2003.

Péter Erdo was appointed on 5 November 1999 by Pope John Paul II as titular bishop of Puppi and Auxiliary Bishop of Székesfehérvár. He received his episcopal consecration on January 6, 2000, the Pope himself since 2003 Erdo, Archbishop of Esztergom- Budapest. He is also Primate of the country.

Pope John Paul II took Péter Erdo on 21 October 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Balbina in the College of Cardinals to. As the youngest participant, he attended the conclave of 2005. In 2006 he was appointed President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences. In addition Erdő is chairman of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference.

Cardinal Erdo is a member of the International Award Committee of Adalbert Foundation. Péter Erdo was on 23 September 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed a member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa ( 4 to 25 October 2009). Following the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Erdo took part in the conclave of 2013. He was considered papabile.
