Peter Guy Wolynes

Peter Guy Wolynes (* April 21, 1953 in Chicago) is an American chemist ( Theoretical Chemistry, Biochemistry ), Professor at Rice University.

Wolynes studied at Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1971 and received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1976. As a post - graduate student, he worked at John Deutch at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1976 he was an Assistant Professor at Harvard and in 1980 at the University of Illinois, where he became professor of chemistry, physics and biophysics at the Center for Advanced Study. In 2000 he moved to the University of California, San Diego ( Francis Crick Professor ) and 2011 at the Rice University ( Bullard - Welch Foundation Professor ), and there at the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics.

It deals theoretically with protein folding and algorithms for predicting the structure of proteins, dynamics of chemical processes in the liquid phase, theory of glasses and the glass transition and electronic structure of liquids and applications in biophysics ( gene regulation networks, stochastic cell biology, dynamics of the cytoskeleton ).

Memberships and Honors

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina, the Royal Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He holds an honorary doctorate from Indiana University and the University of Stockholm.
