Peter Lalor

Peter Lalor ( born February 5, 1827 in Tina Kill, Ireland, † February 9, 1889, Melbourne, Australia) was one of the main leader of the Eureka Stockade rebellion.

Lalor was born in Tina Kill in Ireland. His father was a landowner and political opponents of the British presence in his country. Peter was educated at Carlton College and Trinity College, Dublin, as a civil engineer. In 1852 he emigrated to Australia. At first he worked briefly on the rail link between Melbourne and Geelong. He then retired to Ovens Valley to seek gold. Lalor led the miners in their dispute with the administration of the gold industry. He was injured in the Eureka Stockade and had to be amputated arm. His supporters hid him until it became clear that the miners would be found not guilty in court.
