Peter Ludwig Mejdell Sylow

Peter Ludwig Sylow Mejdell ( born December 12, 1832 in Christiania, now Oslo, † September 7, 1918 ) was a Norwegian mathematician who wrote the fundamental work on group theory.

Sylow studied at the University of Oslo (then Christiania University ) in 1853 and won a mathematics competition. In the years 1858-1898 he taught at the School of Halden. In 1862 he was a substitute teacher at the University of Christiania, where he taught the Galois theory.

The three named after him Sylow phrases he proved in 1872.

Revised Together with Sophus Lie Sylow 1873-1881 the entire work of Niels Henrik Abel. According to Lie Sylow had done our vital work to do so.

In 1894 Sylow editor of Acta Mathematica and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Copenhagen. Lie addressed in 1898 for a Sylow own chair at the University of Christiania.
