Peter Staub

Peter Staub ( born February 22, 1827 in Bilten, Canton of Glarus, Switzerland, † May 19, 1904 in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States) was a native of Switzerland, businessman and politician in Tennessee.

A native of Glarus emigrated at the age of 27 years with his wife Rosina in the United States. In 1856 he came to Knoxville and opened a tailor shop. After the Civil War, dust flourishing business and in 1869 he was appointed to the Swiss Consul for Tennessee. In this role, he helped the Tennessee Clonisation society in the establishment of the Swiss settlement Gruetli (now Gruetli - Laager ) in Grundy County. In October 1872, opened Dust 's Theatre, funded by dust successful real estate transactions, that in the following years was one of the major cultural facilities in Knoxville.

1874 Peter Staub was elected for one year as mayor of Knoxville, in 1881 followed by a second one-year term. As mayor he was responsible for the founding of the city fire department, the local school district and to the expansion of the water supply. 1878 was dust as an American representative at the Paris World's Fair, from 1885 to 1888 he was consul of the United States in St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Peter Staub died in 1904 at the age of 77 years from the consequences of a horse -car accident. He was buried at Old Gray Cemetery.
