Peter van Bloemen

Pieter van Bloemen (* before January 17, 1657 in Antwerp, † April 6, 1720 ), called Stendardo, was a Flemish painter.

Life and work

Bloemen was a student of the battle painter Simon van Douw and received the 1674 Master rights. In 1685 he went to Rome, where he remained until 1694 and fully joined the Italian style. In Italy, he was derisively called because of its frequent depictions flags in his pictures stendardo. In 1699 he was dean of the Guild of St. Luke in his native city.

In his pictorial compositions play mostly landscapes and architecture, especially horses but the main role, whereby it comes to depictions of military life in general. Pieter van Bloemen likely to have been very productive, alone the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich contains eight works. Countless orders from patrons prove the popularity of the artist by his contemporaries, whom his manner was pleasing. This was marked even years after his stay in Italy from the very southern ambience and style.

He was the older brother of Jan Frans van Bloemen and Norbert.
