Peter Young (artist)

Peter Ford Young ( born January 2, 1940 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, lives in Bisbee, Arizona) is an American contemporary painter. He is best known for his abstract paintings in the style of minimalism, post - minimalism, and Lyrical Abstraction.

Life and work

Peter Young studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in 1957 in Los Angeles, California from 1958 to 1960 at Pomona College in Claremont California, in 1960 at the Art Students League of New York and from 1961 to 1963 at New York University.

Peter Young presents abstract paintings in numerous exhibitions in the United States and in Europe since the 1960s. He had his first solo exhibition in 1968 at Galerie Ricke in Kassel (DOT (white ground) ) and in the Nicholas Wilder Gallery in Los Angeles ( curvilinear ).

During the 1960s and 1970s he has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and has participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City and other important places in part.

His pictorial work is a mid-1960s and is based on the formal principles of Minimal Art His early works are still based on basic geometric structures. He painted in austere grids, which, however, he often broke through improvisations. Later he took over from his grating structures and painted circles and freer forms.

The experiences and impressions of his trips to Mexico, Morocco and Spain are also reflected in several series of works. Best known are Peter Young's so-called " Dot Paintings". which he also calls " Psychedelic Paintings". He paints this intensely colored and densely composed circle and dot formations, which replaced the geometry. Many of the late 1960s resulting images show there visions that Young had experienced under the influence of hallucinogens.

From 1972, his " Rorschach Paintings' originated. He folded his canvases and created by the impressions of the still-wet painting colors that are reminiscent of Rorschach test images. Later, he consolidated these paintings to symmetrical, kaleidoscope -like figurations, which he calls "Mandala Paintings".

Peter Young was with some images of participant Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Individual mythologies.

In 2007 he had a major retrospective of his paintings from the period 1963-1977 in the PS 1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens and in the Mitchell Gallery in Chelsea in New York City. 2012 showed Peter Young in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, Arizona his ' Capitalist Masterpieces '.

His pictures have appeared in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, St. Louis Art Museum, the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Blanton Museum of Art, Seattle Art Museum and other museums and collections around the world contain. In the year he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Grant and Theo Doran in 1969 with the award of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
