Petrus Dathenus

Peter Dathenus Pieter data (c. 1531/32 in Cassel, † March 17, 1588 in Elbing ) was a Flemish theologian and reformer.

Life and work

Dathenus first Carmelite monk, the Reformation followed, fled at the onset of the persecution of Flanders and went to England in 1550. As the Catholic Church gained strength there under Mary Tudor in England again, Dathenus turned to Germany, where he was Johannes a Lasco in 1555 appointed as pastor of the Flemish refugee community in Frankfurt am Main.

Violent disputes with the Lutheran preachers such as Hartmann Beyer under the aegis of Joachim Westphal led in 1561 by decision of the City Council to ban the Reformed worship. Frederick the Pious finally offered Dathenus and its 58 families comprehensive community of " Calvinists " in Frankenthal monastery on a branch.

1566 he returned to the home where he participated as a military chaplain in the Dutch struggle for freedom. When he took over the presidency of the Synod in Antwerp, was revised by him and by Guy de Bres for Philip II of Spain wrote Confessio Belgica as a creed adopted.

Due to the pressure of the Inquisition in 1567, he returned back to the Palatinate and chatted with John Casimir of the Palatinate on in France. In 1568 he was moderator of the Wesel Convention, 1570 court preacher to the Elector Frederick and entered 1571 on the Frankenthaler colloquy as chairman of the Anabaptists opposed. Together with Jean Taffin he organized in 1571 by the Synod of Emden, the first national synod of the Dutch Calvinists.

1578 Dathenus was appointed to Ghent and chaired the 2nd National Synod of Dordrecht. He criticized the actions of William of Orange, and left after a wrongly imposed imprisonment the country. About Husum he went to Stade, Danzig and Elbing, where he worked as a doctor until his death.

The Psalms of David

At once flourished the community through the diligence of the settlers. Dathenus strove to unite the Protestants from France, the Netherlands and the Palatinate. He translated the Heidelberg Catechism into Dutch, delivered a Dutch processing of the Huguenot, wrote a Dutch liturgy and edited the French psalms of Clement Marot.

His 1566 published book of Psalms was the official hymnal of the Reformed churches, until it was replaced in 1773 by the " New areas Mung ". With the introduction of the new Psalter, there was considerable resistance in the population. There are now more new versions of the Psalms and the Psalms of Datheen nevertheless continue to be reprinted and used in about thirty towns in Zeeland ( NL).

Today Datheen -Sing evenings draw in the Netherlands, thousands of people and a corresponding association is committed to the preservation of its heritage. Choirs, schools and clubs are named after him.
