Petrus Johannes Schotel

Petrus Johannes Schotel ( born August 19, 1808 in Dordrecht, † July 23, 1865 in Dresden) was a Dutch painter, who, like his father Johannes Christiaan Schotel especially devoted himself to marine painting. Of his paintings are exhibited, among others, in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the South African National Gallery.

Life

Petrus Johannes Schotel was born in 1808 in Dordrecht and trained in painting by his father Johannes Christiaan Schotel, who was also reached mainly by maritime and ship representations to reputation. In the years 1827-1829, and in 1835 he traveled to France, Germany and Belgium, the result of which his subsequent works were characterized by warmer colors.

From 1830 to 1848 he taught as a professor at the Royal Marine Institute of the Netherlands ( Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine) in Medemblik. In 1856 he settled in Dusseldorf, from 1858 to 1863 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artist club paintbox. In 1860 he moved to Dresden, where he died in 1865.

Work

Paintings by Petrus Johannes Schotel are characterized by an emphasis on the dramatic elements of navigation, in addition, it was dedicated to the presentation of historical battles. He was considered an expert on technical and historical details in representations of ships and was in his own style influenced by his father.

Works by him are among others in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the South African National Gallery. In addition, he illustrated with a series of 45 lithographs entitled " Heldendaden the Nederlanders ter zee " of the Johannes Cornelis de Jonge 1833-1848 published work " Geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche Zeewesen " on the history of Dutch seafaring from 12 to 19. century.
