Philip Galle

Philip Galle ( * 1537 in Haarlem; † 12 or March 29, 1612 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch draftsman and engraver of Mannerism. He also worked as a copper engraving dealer, copper engraving publisher and writer.

Philip Galle was a member of a Dutch engraver family. He founded the most important workshop of the Antwerp copperplate production in the late 16th and in the 17th century, which was continued by his sons Cornelius and Theodor Galle. After templates by Pieter Brueghel (eg, 1558 The Alchemist ), Maerten van Heemskerck (eg, the destruction of the Temple of Solomon ), M. de Voin, Jan van der Straet and Frans Floris (eg Lot and his daughters ) created bile some of his finest engravings.
