Philipp Jakob Straub

Philipp Jakob Straub ( baptized April 30, 1706 in Wiesbaden, climbing, buried August 26, 1774 in Graz) was an Austrian sculptor of German origin.

Straub came from a family of artists, his father Johann Georg Straub were also sculptors, as well as his brothers Johann Baptist, John and Joseph were. Like his brothers, he got his first art lessons at the studio of his father.

Through its support, he came to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was inter alia Pupil of Johann Christoph Mader. 1733 Straub settled down in Graz. He married the widow of Johann Jacob Schoy and also was able to take over his workshop and studio. The satisfaction of his ecclesiastical and courtly client struck soon settled in Straub's appointment as Hofkammerbildhauer.

Between 1750 and 1752 Straub worked closely with his nephew Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.

Reception

Artistic Straub long stood in the shadow of his father; but was then but to his own style. Besides Joseph stammer and Veit Koniger Straub is one of the most important sculptors of Austria.
