Philipp Spitta (poet)

Carl Johann Philipp Spitta ( born August 1, 1801 in Hannover, † September 28, 1859 in Burgdorf ) was a German Lutheran theologian and poet.

Life

A French Huguenot family entstammend, he started after the visit of the high school apprenticeship as a watchmaker. After the termination of this doctrine, he studied from 1821 to 1824 Theology at the University of Göttingen. One of his companions at this time was Heinrich Heine, whom he met in a poetic circle of friends.

After passing the first exam he took over the position of a tutor near Lüneburg. Activities as curate in 1828 Sudwalde, and later as a prison chaplain and preacher in Hameln Garrison followed. The same time he worked as a secretary for the " Christian Association in northern Germany ." In 1836 he took a pastorate in Wechold. In 1847 they transferred Spitta the Office of the Superintendent in Witt rings. Six years later he became superintendent in Peine.

1855 awarded him the Faculty of Theology of Göttingen in recognition of his pastoral life and work of the honorary doctorate.

In 1859, Spitta came as superintendent to Burgdorf.

Spitta wrote many hymn texts in the spirit of the Lutheran revival movement. They are characterized by depth of content, authenticity of language and form of the security. Many of them are still alive today.

Family

Spitta's parents were Gottfried Wilhelm Lebrecht Spitta (* 1754 in Braunschweig, † 1805 in Hannover), businessman and voice teacher, and his wife, Henriette Charlotte Pious ( * 1759 in Hannover, † March 15, 1847 ibid.). She was a granddaughter of the Hanoverian bankers David Michael David, whose banking house went up later in the Deutsche Bank. After the early death of the father, the mother married her second husband Georg Jacob Knocke.

His brother Heinrich Spitta (* 1799 in Hannover, † 1860 in Rostock) was Dr. med, Associate Professor of (judicial ) Pharmacology and Physikus and professor of therapy in Rostock.

Two of his sons, who emerged from his marriage to Johanna Maria Hotzen, have also been made in this context a name: Friedrich Spitta was an eminent theologian, and Philipp Spitta gained importance as a musicologist.

Another son, Ludwig Otto Adelbert Spitta ( born November 27, 1845 in Wechold, † May 27 1901 in Hameln ) was a pastor in Hameln, on Marienstift (Braunschweig) and in Nice. From 1872 to 1881 he served as pastor sec in Bergen ( Landkreis Celle). He became famous through his sermons here with historical, city and regional historical models which have been published as a book in 1875 held with sermons and lectures.
