Philippe von Gundelsheim

Philip of Gundelsheim (* 1487, † September 14, 1553 in Pruntrut) was Bishop of Basel from 1527 to 1553.

Philip came from the Frankish family of the Gundel home. He studied in Heidelberg and later in Basel. He is also attested as canon. The last Prince Bishop of Basel, he moved solemnly into the city. During the Reformation, he was forced to relocate its headquarters to Porrentruy. Many believers were lost to the new doctrine. Due to the insolvency of the Prince-Bishopric of Bishop got into financial dependence to the Protestant city of Basel.
