Melchior von Lichtenfels

Melchior von Lichtenfels (* around 1517, † May 17 1575 in Pruntrut ) was since 1554 Prince-Bishop of Basel.

Origin

Melchior von Lichtenfels came from a Swabian noble family, originally at the castle Lichtenfels had its headquarters.

As Bishop of Basel, he did not reside in Basel, which was reformed since 1527, but in Pruntrut in the Swiss Jura, where he was also a secular ruler.

His tenure was controversial leadership, in 1568 he was even reprimanded by Pope Pius V. for it. At the Council of Trent he was represented.
