Phillip Johnston

Phillip Johnston ( born January 22, 1955) is an American musician ( among others saxophonist, pianist ) of the avant-garde jazz and film composer.

Work

Phillip Johnston was head of the Microscopic Septet during the 1980s; Member of the band was u.a the young John Zorn. The group combined modern ideas ( like the Lounge Lizards ) with big band and swing sounds. After a hiatus from 1988 to 1992 Johnston returned with the band Big Trouble back to the jazz scene, and took with band members such as David Hofstra and Marcus Rojas for the jazz label Black Saint, a number of avant-garde jazz albums, such as " Phillip Johnson's Big Trouble" or " Flood on the Farm ". 1998, works were created for such films as for the Doris Dorrie - movie "money", with guest musicians such as Dave Douglas, Erik Friedlander and Mark Feldman, who were released on the album "Film Works " on John Zorn's Tzadik label.

Last processed Johnston with guitarist Gary Lucas the musical world of Captain Beefheart ( " Fast'n'Bulbous "). In addition, Johnston played in a duo with accordionist Guy Klucevsek.
