Black Saint/Soul Note

Black Saint is an Italian jazz label.

The label was founded in 1975 by Giacomo Pelliciotti. He was so particular avant-garde jazz musicians of the opportunity to record plate. In 1977, Giovanni Bonandrini the line of the label. 1979 also another label called Soul was founded in touch.

In Black Saint and Soul Note many important American musician of the 1970s took to the 1990s albums, often those from the environment of the Chicago jazz scene, such as the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the musician collectives of St. Louis as the Black Artists Group and the Human Arts Ensemble. The first release of the " Black Saint " label was an album by Billy Harper, 1975; followed in the same year plates of Muhal Richard Abrams, Archie Shepp and Don Pullen. The two labels have been awarded 1984-1989 Kritikerpoll in the Downbeat "Best Label " and " Best Producer ".

The label Soul Note was initially reserved for musicians who are closer based on the "mainstream" of jazz, even if the music transitions between the two labels are fluid. Today, however, there are also plates of Tony Oxley and Bill Dixon on Soul Note.

Seat of the record company is in Tribiano, Italy. Many of the Black Saint recordings were played in Milan, usually on the occasion of the touring musician throughout Europe, sometimes accompanied by Italian musicians such as Giorgio Gaslini, who recorded for the label as well.
