Giorgio Gaslini

Giorgio Gaslini ( born October 22, 1929 in Milan ) is an Italian jazz pianist and composer.

Life and work

Gaslini had as a child piano lessons and his first public appearances at age 13. He took the age of 16 with his jazz trio, the first record on; as a pianist, he refers to Thelonious Monk ( to whom he dedicated an album ), Art Tatum and Lennie Tristano. Until 1951 he studied at the Milan Conservatory piano, composition and conducting. In 1957, he led the festival of San Remo on the octet Tempo e Relazione that represents the first European composition of the Third Stream. Then he invited John Lewis for a Lenox School. As the first Italian musician, he was mentioned as a "new talent " in the Downbeat poll. In the early 1960s, he sought the collaboration with the avant-garde musicians such as Eric Dolphy, Steve Lacy, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Gato Barbieri and Jean -Luc Ponty and similar then with Anthony Braxton, Eddie Gomez and Max Roach. It held first jazz courses in the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia ( 1972-73 ).

He also wrote numerous commissioned works for the Teatro alla Scala, the Teatro dell ' Opera Roma or the Teatro Reggio di Parma, works for chamber orchestra and chorus in 1966, a first performed by Severino Gazzelloni piece for solo flute. Later Gaslini arranged the compositions by Albert Ayler and Sun Ra for piano solo, thus demonstrating their musical content. Between 1991 and 1995 he composed for the Italian Unstable Orchestra, where he also worked as a pianist in these years, the works of Piero Solaire and Skies of Europe ( same CD). Among the more recent recordings, are the first performed in Verona jazz opera Mister O ( 1997), Ballets (1998) with Quartet Live (2000 ) with the Grande Orchestra Nazionale di Jazz, which he founded in 1991, Cantos (2000) and Enigma (2001) highlighted by the Proxima Centauri Orchestra. In recent years, he has several symphonic works composed and performed. He also wrote numerous film scores, such as Michelangelo Antonioni's La notte (1961 ) or Gianni Vernuccios Un Amore (1965). He was also artistic director of the Jazz Festival Imola.

Prizes and awards
