Broad-leaved privet ( Phillyrea latifolia )

The stone Linden ( phillyrea ) are a genus of two species of evergreen shrubs in the family Oleaceae ( Oleaceae ). Its distribution area extends across southern Europe and Asia Minor.

Description

The stone Linden are evergreen shrubs. The constantly against arranged leaves are leathery, entire, shortly petiolate entire or toothed.

The flowers are dioecious distributed getrenntgeschlechtig ( dözisch ), ie male and female flowers are found on different shrubs. They are arranged in compressed, axillary clusters on previous year's branches. The individual flowers are whitish, small and fragrant. Calyx and corolla are four-piece. It also forms two pens that are shorter than the stamens. The ovaries are upper constant and zweifächrig.

As fruit spherical or oblong- ovate, dark purple to blue- black drupes are formed which have a diameter of about 6 mm. The stone core is lignified thin-walled and strong.

Dissemination

One can find representatives of the genus in southern Europe and Asia Minor.

The genus phillyrea is counted in the family Oleaceae tribus to Oleeae.

In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew following types are recognized:

  • Broad-leaved privet ( Phillyrea latifolia L. ) leaves with serrated leaf margin and with five to 12 pairs of lateral nerves
  • Narrow privet ( Phillyrea angustifolia L.): leaves entire, with few lateral nerves pairs
